PEORIA, Ill -- The Catholic Diocese of Peoria announced in a statement on Thursday that they have filed a federal lawsuit today against Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius amd the Obama Administration.
The statement says that "the lawsuit challenges the Obama administration's unprecedented mandate that attacks the freedom to practice religion without government interference."
The Diocese are suing the Administration over the HHS mandate that says that employers must provide insurance coverage that includes contraceptives. The Diocese of Peoria argues that the mandate violates core religious and moral convictions.
"I have an obligation to protect the Church's ability to freely practice our religion," Bishop Daniel Jenky said. "Fortunately, we have recourse to the Constitution and the strong conviction of our Founding Fathers who clearly intended to keep government out of the internal affairs of the Chuch."
