PEORIA, Ill. – The city of Peoria is looking to fill the vacant seat on the city council horseshoe left by the death of Councilman Gary Sandberg.

Sandberg was found dead in his apartment on July 19 from apparent heart problems.

Sandberg served as second district councilman from 1989 to 1997, when he ran successfully for at-large councilman. He retained that seat until his death.

Any Peoria resident interested in being considered to fill the vacant at-large city council seat should send a cover letter and resume to Chayne Chamberlain at or the following mailing address:

Office of the Mayor/Council, Suite 207L
Attention: Chayne Chamberlain
419 Fulton Street
Peoria, IL 61602

The city is accepting applications through August 9.

The mayor and council members have 60 days after a vacancy occurs to appoint a person to the office for the balance of the unexpired term.
