PEORIA, Ill. -- Peoria city officials are taking steps to expand global partners.
The city is about to enter into a sister city agreement with Jwaneng, Botswana.
All week long Peoria city officials have hosted a delegation from Botswana.
Today, the chamber of commerce and other business officials held a roundtable discussion with the group from the African nation. They heard more about Botswana businesses and the economy which is a big exporter of diamonds.
"We would hope that since the mayor has been to Botswana we will now see more businesses and that in Peoria when anybody says Botswana people will know we know where that country is,” said Botswana Ambassador Tebelelo Mazile Seretse.
Both Caterpillar and Komatsu produce mining equipment which is used in Botswana.
This evening Peoria city officials will sign a memorandum of understanding with the mayor from Jwaneng, Botswana on becoming a sister city.
