NORMAL, Ill. -- Cancer patients in the Twin Cities will soon have state of the art technology for radiation treatment.
The Community Cancer Center in Normal has unveiled its TrueBeam STX system that will be used for radiation treatment.
Doctors say it is more efficient in targeting tumors while minimizing the amount of radiation to surrounding parts of the body.
"We expect that these advantages will translate into fewer side effects for patients and also to give, not only patients, but physicians more options in terms of treatment,” said Dr. Shermian Woodhouse, Community Cancer Center Medical Director.
Dr. Woodhouse said now Twin Cities’ patients will not have to travel to Chicago or Springfield to receive this type of cancer treatment.
Health officials say the cost for treatment using the new machine will not change for patients.
