EAST PEORIA, Ill.-- A community celebration years in the making was held today to celebrate the opening of the East Peoria Levee District.

While the weather kept the grand opening from being too crowded, that didn't stop families with younger kids from coming out.

Face painting, balloon animals and glitter tattoos were given out alongside heaters to keep everyone a little bit warmer.

And those that came to the opening are excited about the new stores and the Levee District becoming a nicer area.

Nicki Collins of Peoria said, "It's really nice, it's bringing in a lot of business. I'll come across over here to shop. I think it's really good, I think it's going to bring a lot of people to the area, help East Peoria out a lot."

Stores now open in the Levee District include Costco, Target, Ulta, Gordman's and Mattressfirm. More stores will open in the upcoming months.
