SEATTLE, Wash. -- With the meteorite hit in Russia and the near Earth pass of a large asteroid, space objects have been in the news lately.
NBC News reports that Planetary Resources, Inc. sees the objects as opportunities, not something to fear.
The Seattle based company plans to mine the precious materials from passing asteroids. Asteroids are composed of water and metals, and every time one passes by the Earth, the opportunity to obtain its resources escapes. The company's mission is to develop robotic spacecraft to analyze asteroids and mine them.
Asteroids even contain precious metals such as gold and platinum.
The company says that mined asteroids can be diverted from earth by the robots as well, possibly saving the planet from devastating asteroid hits.
