PEORIA, Ill -- Good grades and community involvement paid off for 19 local high school students who were honored Sunday.

They received the Good Citizens Award and a scholarship from the Peoria chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The national society honored the high school seniors with certificates before a panel that included Congressman Aaron Schock as keynote speaker.

Schock calls the honorees the best of the best of history students in the area.

"I'm just here to encourage them and congratulate them on their hard work and also tell them their country and their state needs them to get involved today," Schock says. "They don't need to wait until they're done with college. They don't need to wait until they find a job. They can get involved with rolling up their sleeves and making the community a better place."

Three junior high school students were also awarded medals for outstanding essays.
