PEORIA, Ill. -- With Veteran's Day right around the corner, Democratic Congresswoman Cheri Bustos hopes to help local veterans.

Saturday afternoon Bustos toured the Peoria Air National Guard Base.

After hearing the needs of local service men and women, she hopes to soon begin discussions with Senator Dick Durbin regarding funding.

Bustos also spoke about newly introduced legislation, which would improve backlogged Veterans Affairs Disability claims.

The backlog has increased greatly following the government shutdown.

"That was not only a $24 billion hit on our economy, but our veterans were hurt as a result," Bustos said. "Now we have to make up some time. We have to hope that the legislation I introduced can actually see some progress. That's what I will keep fighting for."

Bustos' stop in Peoria is part of her "Standing up For Veterans Tour."
