PEORIA, Ill. -- Parts of University Street will be cut down to one lane in both directions over the summer.

Peoria Public Works officials said it is part of an estimated $3 million project to resurface University from War Memorial to Marlene Avenue.

New accessible sidewalks, curbs and gutters are all in the works right now.

Motorists taking University Street may need to plan for extra time into their trip because of possible delays.

Officials are hoping to complete the project sometime in August.

"Really when we are done, we want a project that looks new along the whole street," said Public Works Director, Jeff Smith. "It will function for a long time, not only for the cars, but for the pedestrians as well."

Future construction plans are expected to begin next summer, south on University from War Memorial to Interstate 74.
