PEORIA Ill -- Toxicology results show that an Iraq War veteran from Metamora died from heroin and alcohol intoxication in December.

Initial reports indicated Tyler Ziegel died after he had fallen on ice.

In 2004, Ziegel suffered severe injuries after a car bomb exploded while he was serving in Iraq.

Now, following an investigation, Peoria County Coroner, Johnna Ingersoll said Ziegel's death last year was an accident caused by heroin and alcohol intoxication.

"Metamora Police, specifically Detective Dave Frank of Metamora Police, was investigating the circumstances of Tyler's death after learning the cause of death and what toxicology testing results revealed to us," said Ingersoll.

"There are several ways you can take heroin," said Detective Frank. "He may have known what it was, or he may have inadvertently been told it was something else, and took it."

According to reports, Ziegel suffered no injuries from falling.

Metamora Police say a heroin investigation is still on-going.
