Council gives green light to apartment complex development at Junction City

PEORIA, Ill. -- Tuesday night, the Peoria City Council gave the green light to developers wanting to build a 3-story, 25-unit apartment complex at Junction City.

The controversial measure produced a close vote with 6 yays, 4 nays.

Neighbors in the area have fought the issue for many months, saying it would decrease property values and quality of life, among other issues.

"We have worked incredibly hard to protect our neighborhood. Protecting one's neighborhood shouldn't be this hard. Our city council should be supporting our neighbors," said Carol Long, a neighbor to the project.

Tom Lighter, attorney for the developers, said, "I submit to you in every respect that this projects conforms with zoning. Every effort has been made to accommodate the neighbors' request."

Several conditions were included in the approved motion, including no access will be allowed to or from the complex onto Humbolt Avenue, and no parking would be allowed along Humbolt.
