PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria police officer and another motorist were hospitalized following a DUI crash early Tuesday morning.

According to reports, a Peoria Police Department Prisoner Transport Van being driven by Officer Jim Hartman was traveling northbound on Adams Street near Vine Street when it was rear-ended by a car.

The crash forced the police van up off the ground. The van rolled over and landed on its side. The crash also caused heavy damage to the car.

The driver of the car, Robert R. Groth, 28, of Metamora, had to be removed from the car by the Peoria Fire Department. He and Hartman were transported to OSF St. Francis with non-life threatening injuries.

Groth is listed in fair condition.

Groth was arrested for driving under the influence, driving on a revoked license, illegal transportation of alcohol, driving too fast for conditions, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured vehicle and failure to wear a seat belt.

Groth was also arrested on a Peoria County warrant for domestic battery and a Woodford County warrant for driving under the influence.

He will be transported to the Peoria County Jail after being released from the hospital.
