SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Derrick Smith is no longer a member of the Illinois House of Representatives as house members voted Friday to expel him from office.
The Chicago democrat faces federal bribery charges stemming from allegations he took a $7,000 bribe in an FBI sting.
House members voted 100 to 6 to expel Smith. It's the first time in more than 100 years that a state representative has been expelled.
According to Smith, his colleagues did not wait to hear the full story.
Smith has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. His trial date has not been set.
