PEORIA, Ill. -- The District 150 school board now has more options for its school schedule.

Monday night, the board unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the modification of school holidays which means in the future, if the district wishes, it can hold school or teachers' institutes on several legal school holidays. Those include Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, Lincoln's birthday, Casmir Pulaski Day, Columbus Day and Veteran's Day.

The resolution does not change anything this school year; it only gives the option for the future.

"Some districts do choose to waive some of those days, hold school and to have activities centered around them," said District 150 Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan. "That is not the request right now from the calendar committee. The calendar committee would make a recommendation to the board, the board would have the right to accept that recommendation or to reject it."

The board also approved a tax levy request of more than $68 million, about $1 million less than what it requested last year.

The board also approved a one year contract extension with the First Student bus service.
