PEORIA, Ill. -- The city council approved zoning changes for new athletic facilities at Peoria High during Tuesday night's meeting.

District 150 has spent nearly $1 million buying 31 properties to the north of the school.

Peoria High would use the land for baseball, softball, track and soccer fields. It is currently the only school in the area without these types of facilities.

"When you're inside the building, there's not a sense of pride. But when you leave the building and walk through our current campus, we do look like a school that opened in 1856 and the complex looks the same," said Peoria High School Principal Brett Elliott.

The council also approved eliminating parts of Ellis St. and Woodruff Blvd. for the expansion of the campus.

District 150 board members will vote to expand the athletic fields at a special meeting on Wednesday.
