PEORIA, Ill. -- District 150 Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan is responding to public criticism launched in the wake of the John Wetterauer case.

In recent weeks, Lathan and the school board have been the targets of attacks from supporters of the former Charter Oak principal.

Some have called for her resignation. Others have accused the superintendent of an overly aggressive management style.

Lathan said she has not wavered in her commitment to education and said allegations that she has gone after certain employees are off base.

"You need to understand just because we disagree and you have your story, opinions about how you feel, there's no strong attack,” Lathan said. “Some of you have painted things and put things out to paint a picture that you want to see, it's a difference of opinion...but there are things, we don't go looking for reasons to get people."

The school board this week accepted Wetterauer's request for a leave of absence.

Earlier, an internal investigation found testing irregularities for special education students during Wetterauer's tenure at Charter Oak.
