BLOOMINGTON Ill -- OSF Saint Joseph Medical Center is teaming up with McLean County Area EMS System to promote the importance of dialing 911 during medical emergencies.
According to the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association, 50% of people drive themselves to the hospital when having heart attack or stroke symptoms.
Officials say dialing 911 is safer and has a quicker treatment time.
"If they drive themselves then they are not receiving care quickly so they are delaying their care in a medical emergency. They're putting themselves, their family, and other citizens at risk by trying to drive to the hospital," said McLean County Area EMS System Director, Greg Scott.
Officials also say dialing 911 instead of driving highly increases your chance of recovery.
