PEORIA, Ill. -- Dr. Jasti Rao is resigning from his post at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.
He was one of the driving forces behind the construction of the Cancer Research Center.
His resignation letter says he is leaving due to health concerns.
Dr. Rao joined the college in 2001where he served as a Professor, Senior Associate Dean and Program Director for the Research Center .
UICOMP Regional Dean Dr. Sara Rusch sent a letter to faculty and staff Monday informing them of Dr. Rao's decision to step down.
She will step into Dr. Rao's administrative roles on an interim basis, with the help of Dr. Dimitri Azar.
Dr. Rao is known for his research with cancer cells. His work has been cited as a big reason why the $13-million research center was built. It opened in the fall of 2011.
