KNOX COUNTY -- Fewer prescription drugs will end up in landfills or the water supply thanks to a successful event over the weekend.

Communities across the heart of Illinois participated in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.

The event gives people the opportunity to safely dispose of their expired, unused, or unwanted prescription medication, no questions asked.

In Galesburg, the Knox County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition collected 32 pounds of unwanted pills, enough to fill nine, one-gallon bags full of drugs.

That's double what was collected in April.

The coalition says it will likely host this service again next April.
