EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- One person is dead after a one car rollover crash early Saturday morning.
Authorities said the driver of that vehicle, who survived, was under the influence of alcohol and was arrested at the scene.
The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of Farmdale Road and Bittersweet in East Peoria.
Witnesses said the car exited the road, rolling into a nearby creek.
The victim, 23-year-old Mario Reyes Lopez from Elgin, Illinois, was ejected from the vehicle.
Authorities are unsure if he was wearing a seat belt.
A Monday autopsy showed that Lopez died of compressional asphyxia.
The driver, 20-year-old Joseph W. Owens from Niles, Illinois remained in Tazewell County Jail Saturday night.
He is charged with reckless homicide, aggravated DUI, improper lane usage, and failure to wear a seat belt.
He is due in court Sunday at 9 a.m.
Three other individuals were in the car and did not sustain any life-threatening injuries.
