EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- The East Peoria Fire Department gathered to honor the memory of their fallen comrades.

The last firefighter to die in the line of duty was William A. Folmar. He was struck by a vehicle while on the scene of an accident in 1980.

In all, four firefighters have died while on duty, dating back to 1959.

Those firefighters were remembered Sunday, as their biographies were read aloud and bagpipes played in their honor.

"It's important for the department and the community to remember but it's also important for the family members so they know that we have not forgotten about their loved ones and we never will," said Lt. Garry Grugan of the East Peoria Fire Department. "Every year we have family members of these firefighters that attend this service from spouses to children and now grandchildren of these men."

The service also honored two retired firefighters who passed away this year.

The ceremony is held every October to coincide with fire prevention month.
