WASHINGTON, Ill. -- A Washington family was able to escape an early morning house fire thanks to man's best friend.

Several fire departments were called to 404 James Parkway around 1 a.m.

The homeowner, who did not speak on camera, said his dogs barking alerted him, his wife and two children to the fire.

The flames did spread to an adjacent home, causing damage to the side of the house.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
