EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- Nola Mallicoat spent Thursday morning applying for a job at the new Target store that opens March 10 in East Peoria.
Mallicoat used to operate a forklift for Caterpillar but has been out of work since July.
"When you go from a job that makes 17 dollars or more an hour down to unemployment that puts a real stress on you," she Mallicoat.
If she's lucky, Nola will be one of the 150 to 200 people hired for the new store. Most of the staff will come from applications submitted at a job fair Target is holding this week on the East Peoria campus of Illinois Central College.
The store is looking to fill a variety of positions.
"Anywhere from front end team members to sales floor team members as well as in our logistics positions," said store Team Manager Jessica Hastings. "We also have several specialty positions in the building. We'll have a Starbucks, a Pizza Hut and a pharmacy and we're looking to staff those positions as well."
To snag one of those jobs, it will take more than fill out the application.
Once inside the job fair, potential employees are required to watch a video. When they are through, they're brought to an interview area where they are asked about what they saw and how they wouldd deal with specific in-store situations.
"If someone came up to the register and they had a price they thought was different than it rang up what would you do in that case?," recalled applicant Natalie Bohm of one of the interview questions. "I told them that I would check with someone else to see if they knew the answer. If they didn't (know) I would go find it myself because you always want to make the customer happy."
However, giving right answer might not matter if an applicant fails make the right first impression.
"The best thing an applicant can do is come in with a great smile on their face and a positive attitude," said Hastings.
The Target job fair will continue at ICC on Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Store officials anticipate collecting between 500 and 800 applications.
