BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Starting Friday, anyone under the age of 18 visiting Bloomington's Eastland Mall on Friday and Saturday nights must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 21 years old.
According to the mall's general manager David Cate, the new youth escort policy is being implemented because of safety concerns.
He said 60 percent of the bans and arrests at the mall over the past year have been unsupervised youths.
Cate said both shoppers and store owners have voiced their concerns over mall safety.
"All of the entrances starting at 6 pm will have an officer at the entrance," Cate said. "They will be carding folks who are not of 18 years of age and making sure that the adult who is with them, making sure that they're 21 years or older."
The youth escort policy will be in effect at Eastland Mall every Friday and Saturday night starting at 6 p.m.
There will also be a greater presence of security personnel on those nights.
Mall employees are exempt from the policy.
