PEORIA, Ill. -- Area police took a different approach to helping the community Saturday, by taking over Chick-fil-A.
Local and State Police Departments teamed up with Chik-fil-A for Saturday's "Police on the Patio" fundraiser.
The "Eat More Chicken" cow and McGruff the crime dog took off in a foot race in the parking lot, and the Pekin Police Department's K-9 unit held a narcotics demonstration.
Pekin Police Officer Ryan Smith says Saturday's event is part of law enforcement's constant effort to raise awareness for Illinois' Special Olympics.
"We're just coming up with as many events as we can all year round," said Officer Smith. "This one is brand new. We're just lucky enough Chick-fil-A partnered with us and planned something like this for us."
Officer Smith says several new fundraising events for the Special Olympics are in this works for this year.
