PEORIA, Ill -- More than 20 emergency response agencies gathered at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie on Thursday for Peoria County's 8th Annual Emergency Expo.

The event gives area residents the opportunity to explore emergency response vehicles such as fire trucks and squad cars. First responders from participating agencies were on hand to offer equipment demonstrations as well.

The event serves as more than a day of excitement -- it helps prepare kids for an emergency situation.

Attendees could also meet with law enforcement officials to develop an emergency preparedness plan for their homes and families.

"Well this is a perfect event for kids to experience emergency equipment and meet first responders, when they're not in an emergency, because that's a scary situation," said Jennifer Fulton, Peoria County Director of Strategic Communications. "In a relaxed, comfortable environment like this, then if they are going to experience an emergency, they're more used to seeing people in uniform and seeing equipment, and they're not quite as scared."
