PEKIN, Ill -- In Pekin Friday night, every step is another birthday as hundreds gather for the annual Relay for Life.
Participants are walking around the clock to raise awareness and money at Mineral Springs Park.
The overnight event features a dove release, survivor walk, and the popular lighting of the luminaria.
Organizers said the Pekin Relay for Life is more than just a fundraiser, it is a community event.
"We have thirty three teams here this year. We are going to have over 300 participants here. So it is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come out," said Ken Webster, Chairman of the Pekin Relay for Life.
Participant Ursula Webster said, "Our church, St. Paul Saints has been doing Relay for 13 years. And we love to do this. We have a lot of family members and friends that have had cancer or is battling cancer right now and it is a wonderful event for the community".
Officials hope to raise over $100,000.
The community is welcome to celebrate this year's event with a sausage, biscuit and gravy breakfast at 6 am Saturday.
The relay will conclude at 9 am Saturday morning.
