PEORIA, Ill. -- An Alabama woman spoke to students and community members on Bradley's campus Tuesday night, telling her story about pay discrimination.
After working 19 years for Goodyear Tire, Lilly Ledbetter discovered she was making 40 percent less than her male counterparts, working the exact same job, only a different shift.
She filed a lawsuit after retiring, which she lost despite going all the way to the Supreme Court.
Ledbetter now encourages all young people to know their rights and current employment laws. She also advises doing your own research.
"The young women need to learn how to negotiate and get up front what the men are getting too, because it's still a double standard today, the men are paid much greater than women and that shouldn't be," Ledbetter said.
Her efforts eventually resulted in the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009.
