HOPEDALE, Ill. -- Hopedale residents lined the streets Sunday night to welcome home a fallen hero.

Marine Captain Reid Nannen, 32, was killed March 1 when his plane crashed during a military training exercise in Nevada.

His remains returned home to central Illinois as friends gathered outside Davis Funeral Home just after 9 p.m. Sunday.

A former instructor described Captain Nannen as an inspiration to many people.

"He knew what he needed to do and help me figure it all out. He was one of those good kids," said former swim coach Peggie Rossi.

Captain Nannen served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and received several service medals.

Visitation services are scheduled for Friday, March 21 at 4 p.m. at Olympia High School in Stanford, Ill.

Captain Nannen is survived by his wife and four small children. A memorial fund has been set up for the Nannen family. For more information click on the link above.
