SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Illinois firefighters who have gone above and beyond to serve our communities, and two who died in the line of duty, were recognized Tuesday at the state capitol.

Governor Pat Quinn joined firefighters from across the state for the Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Firefighter Medal of Honor awards ceremony. It is a chance to pay tribute to those lost while recognizing life saving acts of bravery.

"There are heroes among us," Quinn said. "They are not celebrities, they are not the people you see on TV every night. They're the heart an soul of Illinois."

One of the two firefighters who lost his life this past year was Chris Brown, a firefighter with the Hudson and Bloomington Fire Departments.

Firefighters representing the Illinois communities of Galesburg, Washington and Cuba were also honored.
