PEORIA, Ill. -- Thunderstorms were pounding the area Sunday causing sporadic power outages earlier in the day, and hail in some areas.

Some residential areas were hit harder than others. Lighting struck a tree in the 1000 block of West Virginia.

Residents called Ameren, but before they could arrive the tree fell onto power lines, knocking them down across the street.

"I saw the wind start to pick up a little bit," said landlord David Schwab. "I moved back. I shut the main breaker off in the house in case it would ground against the house and it just came down. It was a matter of minutes."

Neighbors then worked to remove the fallen branches from their driveway.
