VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Authorities found a mother and her two children dead inside their suburban Detroit home while trying to notify them that a family member had died in a car crash.

Police arrived at the Belleville, Mich home to tell the resident her husband, 38-year-old Michael Van Der Linden, had been killed in a crash while driving the wrong way on an Indiana freeway.

When no one answered the door, police went inside the home through an open door.

The mother and her sons were found stabbed in the chest.

Authorities say they are investigating the case as a homicide and that Van Der Linden's car was completely burned so it is not possible to look for a knife.
