PEORIA, Ill. -- One woman is dead and another is hospitalized after an early morning car crash on Peoria's south side.
Police were called to the scene at Marquette and Griswold at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Officers said they found a Ford Explorer in the front yard of a home and two victims lying on the ground.
"When they (police and fire) arrived there was fire coming from the vehicle," Lt. Steve Roegge of the Peoria Police Department said.
A witness told police the SUV was speeding when the driver lost control and crashed into a tree.
Lt. Roegge said it appeared that witnesses pulled the women from the SUV.
The driver, Nicole S. Bailey, 29, of Peoria, was pronounced dead at the scene just before 1:30 a.m. An autopsy performed Wednesday revealed Bailey died of head injuries. Toxicology results are pending.
The passenger, Precious Bailey, was transported transported to OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
Her condition is unknown.
