PEORIA, Ill. -- A building was intentionally set on fire Tuesday so new firefighters could learn the ropes.
For the past two weeks, firefighters have been honing their skills at the Peoria Fire Training Academy.
Tuesday's practice focused on survivor skills, which includes finding lost crew members and rescuing officers trapped within the building.
"In the classroom, all the tools work right and exactly like they're suppose to. In the classroom viability is good and everything and this environment is totally changes it," said Assistant Fire Chief for the East Peoria Fire Department Rick Ward.
Once the test is over, the crew critiques themselves on what went right and what to improve on in the future.
