PEKIN, Ill. -- Firefighters were out in full force throughout Pekin on Wednesday morning but there was no need to sound the fire alarm.

For the past seven years, the Pekin Fire Department has stationed fire trucks along highly traveled school routes.

The goal is to promote safe travel for kids going to school. It is a combined effort of the Pekin Fire Department and District 108.

"A lot of times people don't recognize kids throughout the summer. Usually they're just out playing and not around the schools or bus stops, and hopefully they'll see us out here and it will raise awareness that schools are back in session,” said Pekin Fire Chief Kurt Nelson. “They need to pay attention, put their cell phones away and make sure they look out for the safety of the kids."

In all, firefighters and Sparky the fire dog fanned out over 11 school zones in Pekin.
