Flood coverage differs with insurance plans

As the clean-up from the flood begins, homeowners and renters will be faced with whether or not their homeowner's insurance policy covers damage from the flooding.

And it all depends on the insurance you have.

For example, Sump Pump Insurance will only cover water damage if the sump pump failed because it is powered by electricity, or if it simply backed up and can't take on the water that is coming in.

It would not pay for your home being flooded or for water seeping into your home through the foundation or walls.

That would be covered under flood insurance, a separate policy insurance agents can write for your home.

If you are concerned about whether your home has the proper amount of coverage, a local insurer says your best bet is to take the time to sit down with your agent and discuss your policy.
