PEKIN, Ill.—People are being evacuated due to flooding at the sewage treatment plant.
The flood was caused by a pipe failure around midnight last night.
Crews worked for hours trying to plug the leak.
Areas on the Northwest side of town are being evacuated as the water is starting to come up through the storm drains.
By noon most of Jane street, one of the lowest points in town, was already flooded and the water was still rising.
Pekin City Manager Joe Wuellner says the plant is still functioning at this time.
Wuellner said, "The newer equipment is still working so we're still processing the sewage that's coming in but you know the site itself will probably be underwater for several days until the river goes down and we can pump it back out."
The Red Cross has set up a shelter for area residents at the I.C.C. Cougar Plex.
