PEORIA, Ill.-- If you're eating unnatural, processed food, chances are you might not know it.
The Food and Water Watch of Peoria met today to rally for a bill that would make labeling genetically-engineered food the law.
The change would include plants and food altered in a laboratory.
State Senator Dave Koehler sponsors the bill.
Koehler, along with local farmer Doug Thompson and others, spoke at the event.
Senator Koehler, who is also the chairman of agriculture and conservation, says the measure is about the safety of consumers.
“It's about transparency," Koehler said. "It's about labeling so that the consumers can make the choice and I want to make that point particularly clear here today, that this is really just a consumer choice bill."
If the bill passes, all food containing more than one percent of foreign, genetic ingredients would require labeling.
Senator Koehler says the bill will not be brought up until the spring.
