PEORIA Ill -- Area veterans and active military members in Peoria received a helping hand for the holidays.

AMVETS Post 64 in Peoria were busy putting together 84 food baskets for veterans and service men and woman.

The baskets included turkey, potatoes, canned goods, and other items to last families for weeks.

This year, Am-Vets also raised enough money to add toys for children of Veterans along with $15 gift cards for Target.

"They're not settled in yet so they do need some help. Their families need help and we have older veterans that we help out also. Just a lot of people," said Christmas Baskets Committee Chairman, Richard Mitchell.

AMVETS increased their number of baskets for the year by 30 with fund-raising and donations.

They are aiming for an even higher goal next year.
