ROCKFORD, Ill. -- Four people are dead after a fatal overnight house fire in northern Illinois.
According to authorities, two people managed to escape the fire at the home on Rockford's southeast side.
The structure is a total loss and firefighters are working to determine a cause.
"Upon our arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions throughout the whole structure, made numerous rescue attempts, but unfortunately we have to report there are four confirmed fatalities," said Chief Matthew Knott of the Rockford Fire Department.
The two people who managed to escape were able to cal 911 and were treated at a local hospital. However, the extent of their injuries has not been confirmed.
