PEORIA, Ill. -- People throughout the area got their blood tested for high glucose at the Hult Center.
Last year, the Illinois General Assembly passed a law declaring November 14 Diabetes Awareness Day.
Officials say more than half of the 800,000 Illinoisans who have Diabetes are unaware of it.
Among those getting checked was State Representative David Leitch, who has been personally impacted by the disease.
"My mother has it severely. In fact, my father has to get up at three o'clock in the morning to check her count because often at night she has low blood sugar. If it gets too low then often, we'll have to go to the emergency room. So this is a very serious problem," said State Representative, David Leitch.
The Center for Disease Control estimates that by 2050, 1 in 3 Illinois residents will have Diabetes.
