PEORIA, Ill. -- With summer right around the corner, a local organization is stressing the importance of bicycle safety.

Children's Hospital of Illinois and the Peoria Think-First Foundation handed out hundreds of free bike helmets at the Peoria Chief's game Thursday night.

Parents and children also got information on how to properly wear helmets and other safety tips.

The giveaway was made possible by a $60,000 grant from Kohl's.

"People will say why should we wear bicycle helmets. Many people didn't wear them when they were younger. But think about all of the distractions people have today. They are on their cell phones and GPS. We are just trying to prevent as many brain injuries as we can."

Another helmet giveaway night will be planned for next month because of the bad weather.
