PEORIA, Ill. -- A close friend of Laongdao Phangthong and Phouvone Sophanavong said she is in shock over her death and his suicide attempt.

Valy Slagel said Phangthong left her husband a few months ago, and had been staying in Peoria at her home.

Slagel said she warned Phangthong to be careful after Sophanavong began to grow jealous and violent over the past two years.

She said her friend obtained an order of protection on September 24 after Sophanavong allegedly put a gun to her head and threatened to kill them both if she did not return home.

"Then she go to work, and tell someone at work that her husband tried to kill her. Then he would ride around the work everyday. The people who stood outside to smoke, they saw him ride by everyday. Then they said you have to go to the police right now, and get an order of protection. If not you can not come to work because they want to protect their other employees," Slagel said.

Slagel said Phangthong was more than just her friend, she considered her a sister.
