Galesburg woman sentenced for fatal hit-and-run

GALESBURG, Ill. – A Galesburg woman was sentenced Wednesday to nine years in prison for a 2012 hit-and-run that killed a Knox College student.

In August, Lakeesha Smith, 34, pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

Smith was allegedly driving drunk on October 28, 2012 when she struck Knox College junior Tundun Lawani as she crossed the street near campus.

Prosecutors had asked for nine years. Smith will receive credit for 381 days she has already served behind bars.
