Giving back to the community one can at a time

PEORIA, Ill. -- United Way Officials are thanking the Peoria and Pekin Communities for their generosity.

On Friday, the Heart of Illinois United Way held its 4th annual Day of Caring food drive.

In just the past three years, the local United Way has raised more than 150,000 pounds of food, and has donated to more than 130 food pantries.

As of 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 38,000 pounds of food had been collected.

Volunteers say the food drive goes beyond helping others.

"I hope people get a better appreciation of what a special community we live in. It's a very giving community both dollar wise for the campaign, but also for small things like the food drive," said Vice President Heart of Illinois United Way Don Johnson.

If you would like to donate to the campaign, you still have time.

Peoria locations will collect donations through the weekend.
