PEORIA, Ill. -- A new grant will help local researches in the fight against childhood obesity.

On Thursday, the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria announced that it now has an extra $250,000 to research the growing problem.

The grant was given to the college by the American Cancer Society.

Researchers are hoping to uncover better ways doctors can connect with their patients to make sure children and their families are leading healthy lifestyles.

Research begins this month at doctor offices throughout central Illinois and will take two years to complete.
