We know it has been cold in the Midwest this winter and now there's more proof of that.

The Great Lakes are set to break records for ice and cold and NASA has the photos to prove it.

The Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab says 87 percent of lakes are covered in ice.

The last time the lakes were covered in this much ice it was 1979.

More than 50 percent of Lake Michigan is ice-bound, which is why an ice-breaker has been brought in to keep shipping lanes open.

About 92 percent of Lake Superior is ice covered.

Researchers say at the rate the ice is growing, the Great Lakes could set a new record sometime next week.
