PEORIA, Ill. -- With all the holiday shopping, store parking lots are getting full, but the Illinois Secretary of State Police are making sure people with disabilities still have their rightful place to park.
Officers were at Northwoods Mall Friday to make sure shoppers weren't parked illegally in disability parking spaces.
Investigator Jack Baskett says it's easy to get caught up in the Black Friday commotion, but it's not an excuse for taking and abusing those parking spaces.
"Those placards aren't just given out, they're given to those people who really need them. Those spaces are allotted for them. With the high volume of traffic out here, they're the people who need to be up close. You come out early for the Black Friday Special, but you're risking the chance of getting a 150 to 500 dollar citation and suspension for just a simple parking space that you don't need," said Illinois Secretary of State Police, Investigator Baskett.
The patrols will continue throughout the Christmas shopping season.
