The heavy rains over the weekend left a section of Interstate closed in Morgan County and Macmurry College in Jacksonville with serious water damage.

Illinois State Police closed a section of Interstate 72 over the weekend and redirected traffic to alternate routes.

Meanwhile, parts of Jacksonville were evacuated because of the rising waters. The Jacksonville water treatment plant and several area roads were also submerged after an estimated 12 inches of rain fell on areas east of Jacksonville Saturday.

A boil order is in effect until Jacksonville's water plant is functional.

At Macmurry College there was a foot of water in the education building and three gyms were flooded.

In Scott County, a levee near Oxville broke Sunday, flooding thousands of acres of Illinois River bottom farmland and closing Illinois route 100. A Scott County Sheriff's Department spokesman said there were three breaks in the levee and one of them was about 400 feet long.
