HOPEDALE, Ill -- A rural hospital is making a big expansion.
Thursday, Hopedale Medical Complex broke ground on a new seven million dollar hospital expansion.
The process began 5 years ago, but was delayed in September of 2010 due to high interest rates, an unresolved property tax issue with the state, and the unknown effects of what President Obama's new healthcare program would bring to the hospital.
Once constrution is complete, the expansion will include a new Emergency Department, new Intensive Care Unit, six new patient rooms, and a helipad.
Hopedale's Chief Operating Officer Mark Rossi says this expansion is just phase one for the hospital.
"Then in a few years we are going to look at a couple other things. Adding a new addition to the nursing home, which we have an addtion we put on in 2002, but we're still using one that was built in 1958," Rossi said. "So that will have to be replaced as well as probably add some physician offices and maybe at that time more hospital rooms."
Construction will begin in May of next year, and is expected to be done in the Fall of 2014.
